Meat grinder for clay :-) |
In the morning, Horace has planned for us an appointment with one teacher,
Mr. Lin, who is very experienced in this way of making pottery. First, we've had a chance to ask all kind of questions about pottery (there has been one artist, who can speak english -
Catherine Kao and she has been really into it, so it has been very interesting). We've also seen something like
meat grinder, but for clay. Before making clay, you should be 100% sure, that there is no air in the clay, it could damage all your work during the fireing.
Later the teacher has
demonstrated for us, how to make pottery. It has seemed quite easy. But the true is, that if you'd like to make a vase, it takes about a year. And just center the clay on the wheel usually takes three of four months of every week class for 3-4 hours..

When you cut the clay, it should has the same thickness |
After the demonstration has been our turn.
We've tried to make a pottery. Mr. Lin has centered the clay for us and we've tried very hard to make something called pottery - plate, cylinder or some kind of "vase". It has been fun. I've done some pottery, when I was a child. I actually still have some pieces at home. But it has been almost fifteen years ago.. I think, I've done my best, because I've actually made small plate and cylinder. But it has stood on the wheel only for a while :-)

I've been very focused.. |

..and Geena too :-) |
When we've finished our experiment, Mr. Lin has showed us
advanced throwing pottery. You need to be pretty handy to make it. You center it two times, so it seems interesting. After his show, we've also seen, where does he put
the glaze on the pottery and some different ways, how you can decorate it. And of course
kilns ;-)

Catherin's ducks |
We've also visited the
Catherine Kao studio. She is a little bit specialized in making ducks, bags and shoes from pottery. Unfortunatelly she has had most of her pottery on some exhibition, so maybe next time ;-)

In the afternoon, we've taken some video shots on San-Ying Arts Village and we've tried to make a video. Hopefuly, it will come soon :-)
Such a great experience, it seem very interesting. I'm going to Taiwan soon and planning stay for awhile. Wish can have a chance to experience wheel throwing. Is Mr.lin will have workshop on it or by any chance I can visit?
